Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are two major cities in northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is larger and more developed as a tourist center, known as the “Rose of the North.” Chiang Rai is smaller and quieter, located near the borders of Myanmar and Laos. Both cities offer rich culture and beautiful nature, and are often visited together, with Chiang Rai also known for being close to the Golden Triangle.
