Nha Trang is a coastal city in south-central Vietnam and the capital of Khánh Hòa Province. Located on the south bank of the Cái River estuary, it had a population of about 360,000 in 2005. Originally built as a fortress in ancient times, the nearby Phu Hai area is an important cultural site. Offshore islands provide natural protection for the harbor. The city hosts an air force base and is known for producing fish, shrimp, and bird’s nests. It is home to the Oceanographic Institute and Vietnam’s largest aquarium, featuring over 1,000 fish species. Railways and highways connect it north to Tuy Hòa and Quy Nhơn, and south to Phan Rang and Phan Thiết. Ancient Cham temples are found in the nearby hills.
