Zhang Jia Jie 张家界

张家界市位于湖南省西北部。市政府驻地为永定区，面积2172平方公里，人口40.77万，其中少数民族30.21万，占总人口的74.1％。人口密度为每平方公里188人。 张家界，相传汉代留侯张良墓葬于此而得名。本世纪50年代，当地政府在张家界建国营林场。70年代末，张家界罕见的石英砂岩林奇观被世人发现，得以开发。1982年9月25日，国家计委行文，将林场所属范围定名为“张家界国家森林公园”。张家界成为中国第一个国家森林公园。

Zhangjiajie City is located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province. The municipal government is seated in Yongding District. It covers an area of 2,172 square kilometers and has a population of 407,700, among which ethnic minorities account for 302,100, making up 74.1% of the total population. The population density is 188 people per square kilometer.

Zhangjiajie is said to be named after Liu Hou Zhang Liang, a prominent figure from the Han Dynasty, whose tomb is believed to be located there. In the 1950s, the local government established a state-run forest farm in Zhangjiajie. In the late 1970s, the area’s rare quartz sandstone peak forest formations were discovered by the public and began to be developed. On September 25, 1982, the State Planning Commission issued a document officially designating the area of the forest farm as “Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.” Zhangjiajie thus became China’s first national forest park.
